You don't have to leave it in there, but I do. It's easier just to leave the primer 1/8" tube in the larger vinyl tube. I attach the other end to a powerhead venturi intake as insurance that the overflow will restart in the case of a power failure. Thanks for commenting.

Do you have to leave the 1/8'' tube in the larger one after you start the siphon?

Yes that is a tidy system, I would say it looks somewhat more professional? But can you whip it up in a emergency to use off the side of a rubbermaid bin?? lol

Nice design with easily available equipments.

If you want to make this system look nicer (a lot nicer), here is how some others do it. The physics is all the same, except it's entirely PVC pipes, plus never need to worry about displacing tube causing the seal to break.

And here is this pipe working in real time,

Cheers,

Got it now. I'm going to try this when I do get my tank up and running to supply my refugium that I'm working on now. That is also a diy project.

I usually connect the 1/8" vinyl hose to the venturi port on a power head so that i don't have to apply suction with my lips. Also in the event of a power failure it's nice to have the extra insurance that the siphon will automatically restart when the power comes back on.
