I've tried using a thin nylon sock to block the debris, but I found that the knit was too tight and it clogged very quickly. A small swatch of window screen netting seems to work best for me.

Hi Marcel,

Do you think hosiery would be a good material for the mesh and double it up if you had too? would that be enough to air the eggs and stop debris coming in to the chamber?

Just found my bangai male with eggs !

Thank you so much for your information this has helped greatly quick and easy instructions.

If the fry are fully formed I will usually leave them in a floating fry trap with an air stone for aeration, but if their egg sac is still visible, I'll put them in the tumbler.

To put the eggs into the tumbler, I just twist the egg compartment off and use a turkey baster to transfer the fry.

I'm sure there must be another way to do this, so if you have developed one, like a trap door, or egg port or something else, please share it with us! Once the fry are in there I make a point of not taking it apart, so as to not chance spilling the fry in the main tank. If I need to add more fry I'll just use another tumbler.

Hi Ben!
I'm glad you found the article useful. Good idea with the hamster tubes! They are probably a lot stronger than the fluro tube covers.

It's fine if the eggs are sitting on the mesh, as long as they are still swaying or have some indication of water flow. I usually set the air flow to have them softly bouncing off the bottom, up to about half of the chamber.

This is most important in the first week. After they have eyes and tails and can motor around you won't have to watch it as closely.

hi, marcel. thanx for your idea on the egg tumbler. i am still very new to malawi cichlids, so this helped me very much. my female abandoned the eggs after i moved her from my community tank to a seperate tank. i ended up using tubing to be used for building hamster mazes to construct the tumbler. after i moved the female on the Saturday she dropped the eggs in the tank from where i picked them up on the sunday, and by the monday evening you could make out the eyes and tail of the young fish. what would you consider to be the best medium for the young at this stage in the tumbler? is it ok for them now to be laying on the mesh at the bottom(when they move their tails they are suspended in the tumbler, but drop to the bottom as soon as they stop moving?) i still have a constant flow of air going through the tumbler which keeps them moving about without them making any movements(rolling about on the bottom mesh) is that a good for them or not?

again thank you, i would appreciate any advice that could help me make the most of my fry.

kind regards,

If you use plastic fluorescent light tube clips and put sucko clips inside you can use 2 to hold that tube in place. You will need to use heater bracket sucko's. ;)

That's a great idea Kai! The daily build up of detruis was a bit of a pain to clear out of the tube.
Thanks for commenting!
